Wegmans opens its first Charlotte store at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, at 11550 N. Community House Road. The building is 110,000 square feet, ten days from opening, and less than half a mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne and I-485 Exit 61. Most coverage treats it as a single event. On North Community House Road it's the latest move in a grocery reshuffle that started in January 2025, when a different store on the same road closed its doors.
Read in order, those moves explain why Ballantyne ended up with this concentration of specialty grocers. They also explain why the October opening matters most for the pattern it completes.
The Store That Left First
Earth Fare's Ballantyne location at 12235 N. Community House Road planned to close by January 31, 2025. The Charlotte Observer reported at the time that competition in the area was one of the factors. The same story noted that the future Wegmans site was about a mile away.
That 26,546-square-foot space sits in the Toringdon Market shopping center. In November 2025, the Observer reported that Whole Foods planned to take it over with minor site and utility improvements. Axios Charlotte photographed construction at the site on August 6, 2026. Its pin put the store near Miró Spanish Grille.
The Observer's coverage of the Earth Fare closure also listed the chains already operating within a few miles of Toringdon Market: Publix, Trader Joe's, The Fresh Market, Sprouts and Harris Teeter. So even before Wegmans broke ground, this part of South Charlotte had more grocery choice than most. One specialty store closed, and the space is expected to go to another.
Publix Filled In the Edges in 2025
While the Earth Fare space sat empty, Publix added two South Charlotte stores within six months of each other. The nearly 56,000-square-foot Quail Commons store at 11525 Carmel Commons Blvd. opened in April 2025. The Arboretum store at 7933 Providence Road, at more than 50,000 square feet, opened September 20, 2025. It was the chain's third Charlotte opening that year.
Those openings sit off Community House Road, along Carmel and Providence. They added full-size conventional stores on the north and east sides of the area, the trips that run on routine. That left the Community House Road corridor itself to specialty and destination grocers.
How Unusual This Mix Is
The Charlotte Observer's April 2026 market-share report gives the regional baseline. Charlotte-area grocery sales topped $10.8 billion in 2025, up 4% from 2024, across 737 stores. Here's how that spending split:
| Grocer | 2025 Charlotte-region share |
|---|---|
| Walmart | 23% |
| Harris Teeter | 15.7% |
| Food Lion | 15.5% |
| Publix | 11.1% |
| Whole Foods | 1.6% |
| Trader Joe's | 0.9% |
| Sprouts | 0.6% |
| Earth Fare | 0.4% |
Across the region, specialty grocers are a small slice of where food dollars go. The same report counted just four Whole Foods stores in the whole region. Yet the Axios piece on the Whole Foods construction lists Sprouts, Publix, Trader Joe's, Wegmans and Whole Foods together in Ballantyne. Axios called it "the land of the fan-favorite grocery store." Grocers that hold low single-digit shares regionally are clustering within a few miles of one interstate exit. Wegmans adds the biggest single box to that group.
What Wegmans Is Bringing to the Road
The scale stands out against everything else nearby. Wegmans bought the 14-acre property for $5.5 million in January 2025 and is investing $34.7 million in the store. The lot has 664 parking spaces, a number the company set by working from the size of the site. The store will employ about 450 full- and part-time workers. The store manager is Patrick McGuinness.
Inside, the format leans hard on prepared food: sushi, pizza, chef-made salads, sandwiches and ready-to-eat meals. It also has fresh seafood, a butcher counter, a bakery, artisan cheese, a full-service deli, and a large wine and beer selection. Hot meals through Meals2Go and catering will be available from the start. The store opens with both pickup and delivery. Wegmans employees handle pickup at dedicated lanes out front, and a third party handles delivery. The company told the Observer it has no plans for a pharmacy at this location.
Before the doors open, Wegmans asked Charlotte what it wanted on the shelves. Its first pre-opening community survey drew more than 1,700 responses within three days. The top request was Bison Dip. Zweigle's hot dogs, Wegmans salt potatoes, Perry's Ice Cream, Weber's mustard and Buffalo Bills merchandise were also near the top. The Observer noted that most respondents asked for western New York products, not Charlotte-local items.
Opening Week, Mechanically
The best guide to the crowd on October 14 is Wegmans' first North Carolina opening. When the Raleigh store opened in 2019, more than 3,000 customers lined up before the doors opened, and the store drew 30,000 shoppers on its first day, according to the company. CJ Bolorin, a Wegmans merchandising area manager who has worked openings in Brooklyn and Manhattan, described the Charlotte response this way:
"When it comes to the Charlotte store, I've never had so many people just stop me and just say, 'We're so excited for Wegmans to be here.'"
Here's what Wegmans has confirmed for that week:
- Traffic. Wegmans' asset protection team is working with CMPD and city transportation officials. Police will be on hand all week to direct traffic around the site, and the plan could run past the first week if needed.
- Early arrivals. Fans can enter the parking lot before opening to tailgate. The "Bring Wegmans to Charlotte" Facebook group, with nearly 9,000 members, has been planning for it. Wegmans will add staff on-site and bring in portable restrooms for overnight campers.
- Bags. The store doesn't offer single-use plastic bags. Paper bags cost 5 cents each at checkout.
- Finding things. A shopping list in the Wegmans app shows the aisle for every item before you arrive. The free Shoppers Club unlocks digital coupons on national and Wegmans-label brands.
The Observer reported in June that the store will have a market café with indoor and outdoor seating, 15 cashier registers and 18 assisted self-checkout stands. The official Wegmans store page lists the opening date but no daily hours.
October 14 is also a busy day nearby. Reid's Fine Foods Ballantyne at 14015 Conlan Circle has an oyster roast scheduled for 4 p.m. that day. A week earlier, on October 7, the Ballantyne Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brixham Park, 15810 Ballantyne Medical Place.
The Piece Still Unconfirmed
Here's the full sequence along North Community House Road:
| When | Address | Change |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | 12235 N. Community House Road | Earth Fare closes |
| April 2025 | 11525 Carmel Commons Blvd. | Publix Quail Commons opens |
| September 2025 | 7933 Providence Road | Publix Arboretum opens |
| October 14, 2026 | 11550 N. Community House Road | Wegmans opens |
| Not announced | 12235 N. Community House Road | Whole Foods expected |
The last row is still open. As of Axios's August 2026 report, Whole Foods hadn't confirmed the address or an opening timeline. If it opens as expected, the two Community House Road addresses that started this, one store leaving and one arriving about a mile apart, will both hold the kind of specialty grocer that barely registers in regional market-share numbers.
Wegmans is already looking past Ballantyne. In September, it agreed to buy Atrium Health land next to Atrium Health Lake Norman in Cornelius. As of the Observer's September 21 report, the company was still evaluating the site and hadn't made a final decision. The company has said it's considering three to five stores across the Charlotte area. For now, Ballantyne is the only one with an opening date.
The store is also setting up local partnerships. Wegmans says Feeding Charlotte will get daily donations of perishable food once the store opens. Starting in fall 2027, its yearly Check Out Hunger campaign at the store will benefit Nourish Up.
